Accidental damage - are you covered?

1 minute

During the holidays more people tend to be in the home which increases the chances of accidental damage.  Typical accidental damage claims would be for spillages on carpets and furniture, an awry football smashing a window or DIY going wrong. It’s therefore important that you have Accidental Damage cover included in your home insurance policy, to either repair any damage or replace any items that are irreparable.

Checking your home insurance policy for Accidental Damage cover

Not all home insurance policies are the same. Some policies are designed to be able to quote very low premiums, but with low premiums normally comes limited cover.

Other home insurance policies include Accidental Damage cover as an optional extra for an additional premium.

Other policies are “All Risks”, which usually means Accidental Damage is included as All Risks policies cover all losses except those specifically excluded. This makes it harder for an insurer to decline a claim as they will have to prove that the loss is excluded.

Protecting your excess

A policy excess is the amount you have to pay if you make a claim. All home insurance policies carry an excess, sometimes called a deductible. It’s important that you understand the implications of these excesses.
